Employees who support their communities are valued. The FirstRand Namibia Foundation provides employees from across the business with the means to support social initiatives through time and monetary donations to their chosen organisations. This is managed through the Volunteers programme.

Support for employees

Governed by clear guidelines, the programme provides support, including matched funding for employee donations of time and money in assisting organisations of their choice. Employees are encouraged to share their time, skills and knowledge with their chosen beneficiaries.

FirstRand Namibia employees are able to
  • coordinate volunteer programmes in their own business units;
  • join existing programmes and initiatives in their business units;
  • volunteer in their individual capacity for an organisation of their choice;
  • share time, skills and knowledge, and assist with capacity building at non-profit organisations;
  • mentor high school learners and university students; and
  • contribute to monthly payroll giving programmes.

Examples of volunteer initiatives

Members of the FirstRand Namibia Exco successfully summitted Königstein, the highest point in Namibia, as part of an initiative to raise money and awareness of gender-based violence in Namibia. For every man that made it to the top of the Brandberg mountain, the FirstRand Namibia Foundation pledged to donate N$10 000 to any staff-nominated anti-gender-based violence organisation or child protection charity. All seven members of the team reached the summit, raising N$70 000, which the foundation matched, resulting in N$120 000 for initiatives/charities involved (directly or indirectly) in the societal challenge of gender-based violence. The Legal Assistance Centre, LifeLine/ChildLine Namibia, Rehoboth Lions Club, SPES Charity, One Economy Foundation, the Rehoboth Women’s Project and the Ruach Elohim Foundation were the recipients of the funds raised through this initiative.

RMB Namibia and FNB Namibia commercial participated in the annual Winter Knights initiative and raised N$5 239, which was matched by the foundation. The funds were used for blankets for the needy. RMB Namibia, through its internal social committee, also organised the RMB Relay Day, which raised N$9 000 towards ad hoc community projects. In addition RMB Namibia introduced the RMB Christmas Box Project. The Rehoboth Old Age Home, PG Kindergarten and the SPCA were beneficiaries of this initiative.
